It’s true that in the *very* long ago Jabber was also the name for the protocol. These days we in the community use Jabber for the network and XMPP for the protocol.

It wasn’t a change per se, those are names for two different things. Jabber is still the name of the federated network. XMPP is the name of the protocol (like for email it is SMTP).
